Why is it important to support anarchist prisoners?
First of all we would like to recognise that we are on stolen land of NAARM (Melbourne) we respectfully acknowledge the Traditional Owners of the land, the Boon Wurrung and Woiwurrung (Wurundjeri) peoples of the Kulin Nation and pay respect to their Elders, past and present. For the Kulin Nation.
Although this is a week for International solidarity with anarchist prisoners in so called Australia, prison. are an implementation of colonisation.Even now aboriginal deaths in custody are happening such as Miss day who died in custody just for being asleep on the train and locked up in police cells, and she died in custody from several falls in a police cell. this is one of many deaths in custody.
It is important to show solidarity to anarchist prisoners. they are the changers of the world. Reaching out to them is vitally important. Some ways we can express our solidarity are: through: banner drops, having letter writing groups writing your own letter, protesting out side prisons and more. These are great ways to show solidarity.
Prisoner support is important. As abolitionists and anarchists we need to understand that prisoners are largely invisible. It’s not popular in activist circles. It is important to challenge the industrial prison complex that profits from the poor, people of colour, refugees, asylum seekers, West Papuan political prisoners ,We are showing the authorities that we are watching and showing solidarity and we there on the outside for prisoners. They are inside for us. the prison authorities take notice and are less likely to abuse the prisoners that are supported.
